Descendants of Charles Finkelman

With this edition of the Fingleman family tree, we are going back two generations farther than we have gone before, to Charles Finkelman, Prussian immigrant.

The link from Don's great-grandfather August Fingleman to Charles Finkelman is now certain, even though part of the link is still missing. We believe that Charles was August's grandfather and that August's father and mother died when August was a child. The year 1860 finds eleven year old August and two brothers living in Houston with Charles and Charles' daughter Carlotta, in the home of Carlotta and her husband Maximillian F. DeBajligethy. August and his brothers are much younger than Carlotta, so we believe she was their aunt rather than their sister.

One of August's brothers listed on the 1860 Harris County census was Louis Finkelman, long time Houston resident and surviving brother named in August's 1923 obituary. The other brother listed on this census was Charles Finkelman, Jr. We know little else of this brother - his name does not appear in any other records we have found, except perhaps as an enlistee in the 2nd Texas Infantry during the Civil War. The fact that this Charles Finkelman was listed as a "junior" could mean that the elder Charles (Carlotta's father) was the father of the three younger boys also, or it could mean that the elder Charles had a son named Charles who was the father of the three younger boys. It could also be an erroneous conclusion drawn by the census taker - we aren't ready to make that call yet.
