1. Charles Finkelman was born about 1792 in Anhalt, Germany.
General Notes: In 1860, Charles lived in the home of his daughter Carlotta and her husband, Maximilian F. De Bajligethy, in Houston, Texas, second ward. The 1860 federal census shows three younger children identified as C. Finkelman, Jr., A. Finkelman and L. Finkelman. It is not clear whether Charles was the father or the grandfather of these children, but we have assumed that he was the grandfather due to the age difference. The fact that he was the father of Carlotta is well documented elsewhere, as Carlotta's husband was a member of Terry's Texas Rangers and later the chief clerk in the city of Houston's Tax Assessor/Collector office for fifteen years before he was hit by a train and killed. The age of the male child named A. Finkelman was recorded as 11 years, which matches the age of August Fingleman, who came to the United States in 1857 and had a brother named Louis Finkelman.

General Notes: Evidence suggests that when August Fingleman and his brothers, Louis and Charles, were enumerated in the 1860 federal census in Houston, Texas, their parents were deceased. The boys lived in the home of Carlotta (also called Lottie) Finkelman and her husband Maximilian De Bajligethy. Carlotta's father also lived in the home. Carlotta had been in the United States for several years, having immigrated from Prussia. She married Maximilian De Bajligethy in February, 1856. August and Louis immigrated to the United States from Prussia in 1857, and stories handed down state that they were victims of a ship wreck off of Galveston that took the lives of their parents.
We have recently obtained a copy of August Fingleman's birth certificate which gives his father's name as Charles. We are including this Charles Finkelman in the tree as the father of the three boys, the son of the elder Charles Finkelman and the brother of Carlotta.

HOUSTON, TEXAS, Feb. 8.–
Yesterday morning Major Maximilian F. de Bajlighthey, while going to his office, was run over and ground to pieces by an International and Great Northern train. For the last fifteen years he had been Chief Clerk in the City Assessor and Collector's office. Major de Bajlighthey was born in Austro-Hungary in 1813, and in the revolution of 1848 he espoused the cause of Kossuth and came to America in 1850 as a refugee. During the war between the States he was a member of the famous Terry Rangers. He was one of the party which buried the crown of King Stanislaus, which has never been found, those intrusted with the charge being sworn to secrecy.

General Notes: We believe that this Charles Finkelman, listed on the 1860 federal census of Harris County, Texas, was the older brother of August and Louis Finkelman. We find no records of this Charles Finkelman after 1860, except for a possible match with a Charles Finkelman who joined the 2nd Texas Infantry during the Civil War, fought in the battle of Vicksburg and was paroled following the Union victory.

General Notes: August immigrated to the United States from Germany in 1857, according to the 1910 Federal Census of Liberty County, Texas. In 1860 he lived in Houston in the home of Maximilian De Bajligethy and his wife, Carlotta (Finkelman) De Bajligethy. Carlotta's father, Charles Finkelman, also lived in the home.
Name is given on 1880 Federal Census of Refugio, Refugio County, TX, E.D. 127, as "A.W. Fingleman". Some descendants believe his middle name was "Lewis", including Mrs. B.L. Finkelman of Houston, who tells an account of the great-grandfather of her husband, Otis L. Finkelman (deceased), coming to America from Germany as a child with his brother August Lewis Finkelman. Clinton Majors has seen a diary kept by August that shows his middle initial as "P".
August's death certificate, which lists his son August as the informant, gives his father's name as "Charles Fingleman" and his mother's name as unknown.
Found a "Mrs. Fingleman" in the Third Representative District, Orleans Parish, LA, on 1850 Federal Census, enumerated 20 July 1850. Her age is 37, birthplace Germany. Other names in same building:

4, at 5:40 p.m. Mr. Fingleman moved to Dayton 23 years ago and built what was at that time the best residence in Dayton. He was born in Germany, but came to this country when he was a small child. He was a quiet, inoffensive man and esteemed by all who knew him. He was 81 years old and is survived by one brother, Louis Fingleman of Houston; two daughters, Mrs. John Vahle and Mrs. Tom Page of Houston; three sons, Aug, Rufe and Joe Fingleman of this city. All of his near relatives were in attendance at the funeral Sunday afternoon which was conducted by Rev. Geo. N Cook.

Louis lived in Houston all of his life. He was named as the surviving brother of August Fingleman in August's obituary published in a Dayton, Texas newspaper in 1922.
Louis's death certificate, which listed his son Henry Louis Finkleman as the informant, gave his mother's name as "Lottie" and his father's name as "Finkelman".

She was born September 17, 1926 in Houston, the daughter of Otto Eugene and Virginia Brunson Jansen. She had been a lifelong resident of Dayton where she attended Dayton High School and was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Fingleman worked for the Dayton Independent School District in Food Service for over 23 years. During this time she befriended many students with her caring love. She enjoyed her friends and cooking, but most of all she loved her family, especially her grandchildren.
Mrs. Fingleman passed away on January 21 in Humble after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of over 50 years, August Marcelle Fingleman; and brothers Wayne A. Jansen and Eugene Jansen.
Survivors include her son, David Fingleman of Conroe; daughter, Virginia Chapin and husband, Melvin, of Elkhart; three grandchildren, Leslie Danaher of Humble, Heather Currie and husband, Craig and Matthew Gilbreath, all, of North Carolina; and one great-grandchild on the way; as well as other family members and friends.
Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton, was in charge of arrangements.
