She was born on January 31, 1925, in Grayson County, Va., to Lawrence Alexander Rhudy and Locky Shelor Rhudy.
She was married to William Cleveland Harris on May 3, 1947, and they have always lived in Grayson County.
She has been a member of the United Methodist Church since her early childhood, having transferred to Lebanon UMC in 1985.
She is survived by a daughter, Clevie Harris Wingate, and a son-in-law, Danny Karl Wingate. One niece, Rachella Rhudy Pippin, also survives.
She was preceded in death by three brothers; an infant who died shortly after birth and William Shelor Rhudy and Franklin Pierce Rhudy.
Winnifred attended Elk Creek High School and Radford College and taught in Grayson and Wythe Counties for 26 years. She served as a social worker for the Grayson County Welfare Department from 1950 to 1965. She has been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star since 1945 and has served many offices, having been Worthy Matron in 1957. She has been a member of the Elk Creek Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary for over 30 years.
The body is at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va. Funeral Service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 13, 2010, in Lebanon United Methodist Church, in Elk Creek, Va. Interment in Forest Cemetery. The Rev. Bill Shupe will officiate. The body will lie-instate at the church one hour preceding the funeral service. The family will receive friends at the church following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Elk Creek Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 36, Elk Creek, Va. 24326 or to Elk Creek Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 130, Elk Creek, Va. 24326. Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va., is serving the Harris family.
