• Obituary: Journal Courier, 4 Feb 2004, Jefferson Co, KY. 6 Carson H. Cornett, 92, of Louisville, died Monday, February 2, 2004, surrounded by his family. Born May 17, 1911, to Cornelia and Robert S. Cornett in Sassafras, KY, he was the last remaining member of the 1928 Carr Creek, KY, basketball team that went to the National High School Championship in Chicago, IL. After attending the University of Kentucky, he worked for the People's Bank of Hazard, KY. In Louisville, he worked for Dupont, owned and operated Cornett Hardware, worked for Metropolitan Insurance and retired from V.V. Cooke Chevrolet. Mr. Cornett and his devoted wife of nearly 60 years, the late Marguerite Cornett, were charter members of Calvin Presbyterian Church, where Mr. Cornett was treasurer and served as an elder for many years. He was a 50-year member of Masonic Compass Lodge #223. Mr. Cornett is survived by his adoring daughters, Linda Winkler and Diane Ferebee; son-in-law, William Ferebee; grandsons, Carson M. Winkler and Andrew P. Winkler; granddaughters, Jane Ferebee, Sara Ferebee and Jennifer F. Klingeman and her husband, Jeffrey Klingeman; great-grand-sons, Justin M. Winkler, Eric Klingeman and Adam Klingeman; five sisters in eastern Kentucky, Mae Martin, Leo Cline, Hester Smallwood, Zeda Watts and Irene Lovelace; and several nephews and nieces. "Nett" will also be greatly missed by his close neighbors, Martine, Tony, Nicholas, Benjamin, Joseph and Maria Siegel. "Carson Cornett was a hero to his family, a consummate story teller, a principled man whose life was a continual example of integrity, humility, humor, commitment and love. He left an indelible impression on all who knew and admired him during his long and amazing life." Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday, February 5, 2004, at Arch L. Heady & Son, Westport Rd. and Herr Ln. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral, which will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, February 6, 2004, at the funeral home. Mr. Cornett will be laid to rest at 4 p.m. Friday in Robert S. Cornett Cemetery, Sassafras, after a brief service in the adjacent Little Dove Church. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the American Heart Association.
