S. Army, Retired Lucy Rigby was born July 30, 1912 in Bloomington, Texas to David Owen Rigby and Fannie Kate Dunman Rigby. She left this life on January 2, 2007, in Austin, Texas. She graduated from high school in Sinton, Texas, and enrolled in college courses at every opportunity, including in Heidelberg, Germany. She held social service positions and worked for Kaffie Lumber Company in Corpus Christi before enlisting in the Women's Auxiliary Army Corps in 1942. She was a Baptist and moved her membership as she moved. Her Army service was special to her. She was a charter member of the Women in Military Service Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery in Washington D. C. Her service in the WAAC was from July 1942 to September 1943, and in the Army WAC from September 30, 1943 to 1963. She served in WWII. She also served during the Korean War. Decorations included Women's Army Corps Service Medal, American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster). After her twenty years service in the Army she was employed in the engineering department at Randolph Air Force Base, retiring in 1982. Lucy was preceded in death by her mother and father, her sister, Lily Rigby Ringle, her three brothers, Leland Bradley Rigby, Russell Martin Rigby, and David Gordon Rigby. She was also preceded in death by her niece, Mary Sue Ringle Hampton, and a nephew, Ted Vernon Rigby. She is survived by nieces Susan Rigby Cook and Charlotte Schwirtz and nephews David Rigby, Johnny Rigby, Charles Rigby and Marty Rigby. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Ethel (Meckie) Rigby of Austin, Texas. Among other survivors are numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews and many cousins all around Texas who will miss her. She was family oriented and loved family get togethers. She belonged to the Sarco Cemetery Association in Goliad County, Texas. She also attended the annual Martin Reunion (her grandmother was a Martin) in Tilden, Texas. She was a member of the Retired Officers Association (now Military Officers Ass'n. of America); The Women's Memorial in Washington; and The U. S. Army Women's Museum Foundation (formerly Women's Army Corps Foundation) at Ft. Lee, VA. Her interment will be at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, Texas at 1:45 p.m. Monday January 8, 2007.
