Dr. Barbara Alleyn Lockard

  Noted events in her life were:

• Obituary. Professor Emeritus Dr. Barbara Zimmerman, 78, of Bowling Green passed away Thursday September 13, 2012. Barbara was born in West Frankfort, Illinois to the late George and Mabel ( Casper) Lockard.

On May 26, 1984 she married James Zimmerman in the Methodist Church in Bloomington Indiana and he survives in Bowling Green. Also surviving are her two step-children: Amy and Paul Zimmerman of Bowling Green and a granddaughter Autumn.

Barbara was a 1952 graduate of West Frankfort High School. She went on to attended Indiana University where she completed her undergraduate work and later obtained her Masters Degree, and in 1978, Barbara obtained her Doctorate in Music from Indiana University.

Barbara was a successful opera singer. She toured with the Indiana Bells through out Japan, Korea and several other islands. She went to New York in 1956 and worked with Beverly Sills at the City Opera and also toured with Judy Garland. In 1955 she auditioned for Jeanine in the Stephen Foster Story at Bardstown, Kentucky. She got the part and was the original Jeannie for three years

.While living in Kentucky, Barbara taught high school music and later taught at the Baptist College in Louisville, Kentucky. After teaching in Kentucky, Barbara returned to New York where she had numerous parts in operas, plays and musicals. In 1971, Barbara took a job at Bowling Green State University, where she taught voice classes, retiring for Bowling Green State University in 2007. During her time in Bowling Green, Barbara toured with opera groups to elementary and high schools and also directed dinner theatres at the First United Methodist Church in Bowling Green. Barbara was an active member in the Black Swamp Players, National Opera Association and the President of the Opera for Youth organization. Barbara was also a member of the First Baptist Church of Greater Toledo and the Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

Visitation for Barbara will be Wednesday September 19, 2012 from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00 PM in the DECK-HANNEMAN FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 1460 W. Wooster St., Bowling Green. Barbara's Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday September 20, 2012 at 10:30 AM in funeral home. Additional visitation will be held in Barbara's honor on Saturday September 22, 2012 from 9:00 until her Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 AM in the First Baptist Church, 106 West Oak St., West Frankfort, IL 62896. Interment will follow in Denning Cemetery, West Frankfort, IL. Memorial contributions may be gifted in Barbara's honor to the Cherry Street Mission, 105 17th Street, Toledo, OH 43604, or to the charity of the donors choice.
