• Obituary. 1 Penick Gentry, also known as Bud and Buddy passed away on Thursday, August 10, 2017.

He was born in Roxboro, NC, May 6, 1927.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Abner C. Gentry and Lelia Walters Gentry.

He is survived by his wife, Janie Hale Gentry, and several nieces and nephews by marriage, and several cousins.

After graduation from high school in Crewe, VA, he joined the U.S. Army. He transferred to the U.S. Air Force from which he received an honorable discharge with the rank of sergeant.

He enrolled in Emory and Henry College, Emory, VA and later transferred to Longwood College, Farmville, VA. He graduated with a BA degree and high honors. Later he attended graduate school at the University of Maryland, College Park, MD earning a M S degree. Afterwards he did post graduate studies at the University of Maryland and George Washington University.

His first job after receiving his BS degree was with the Virginia Department of Health. He subsequently worked in the field of education as a teacher, School Social Worker, Principle and Superintendent. He held position of Vice President with International School Services in New York City and also Princeton, New Jersey. In his position he established schools in foreign countries; for U.S. Corporations with businesses in those countries.

He then retired to Spring Valley, VA for about three years. Subsequently, he accepted a position with CONOCO-Phillips, Houston, TX, in their International Department. After 11 years in this position, he retired again, and he and his wife returned to Spring Valley, VA to enjoy the mountains and their retirement.

From early youth he has been a member of the United Methodist Church and always worked to make life better for all.

A graveside service will be held at the Ebenezer United Methodist Church Cemetery, Spring Valley, VA on Monday, August 14, 2017 with the Rev. Olin Shupe officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the Grayson VFW Post 7726.
