November 10, 1927 to March 16, 2017 - Met her husband at the Canby roller skating rink
Iva May Cornett peacefully passed away March 16th, 2017 surrounded by family.

Iva May Cornett , was born November 10, 1927. Iva grew up on a ranch near Ione, Oregon, poor in amenities but rich in work ethic and life values.

With an absent father, Iva and her mother Ethel Feller became a team. Ethel cooked for wheat ranches during Iva's younger years. Iva played in the creeks, canyons and drank milk straight from the cow.Iva May CornettIva May Cornett

They pulled up stakes and moved to Hubbard, Oregon. Iva attended 8th grade in Hubbard and then high school in Canby. Her mom got a job as a cook and baker at Top-O-Hill Restaurant. Soon after Iva followed suit working as a waitress, a job that continued through high school.

Top-O-Hill would change the direction of their lives.

Mom met her husband Joe Cornett at the Canby roller skating rink. They married in 1951 when Joe was still in the navy.

Three kids were soon to come. Joe, Linda and Sherry just one year apart.

In 1957 Ethel, Iva and Joe bought the Top-O-Hill Restaurant. The first few years were lean, everyone had to work day and night to make ends meet. After lots of hard work; with great pies by Ethel, Joe out front and Iva working both or anywhere help was needed plus raising three kids, the restaurant provided a good living for 19 years.

After selling the restaurant, Joe and Iva bought a spa. Iva managed the spa, which was one of the first professional massage spas in Portland. After selling the spa, they ran a searchlight advertising business.

Iva was crafty. Not just in her way of thinking, but creatively as well. When the kids were in grade school, Iva was always making things for her kid's classes. Pies for parties, pilgrim hats for class plays, and even ran a concession stand at the annual carnival and made more money than any other booth that year.

When her kids got a little older Iva started Tole Painting classes. She stuck with this hobby on and off for a number of years. She was very good. Her fellow students often commented on how helpful and friendly Iva was.

Iva was very active with the class of 46. Meeting with friends for coffee once a week and attending a monthly luncheon.

This is her son Joe's favorite mom story.

One summer day when we kids were about five or six Mom took us to Canby Park on the Molalla River. On our walk to the river, a domestic turkey came running out of the brush. (Apparently one had escaped from a truck passing on 99-E). All of us kids ran in every direction, afraid of being pecked to death. Mom working by herself, chases the turkey down, catches it, wrapped it in an old burlap potato sack from the car. Off we go on the way home with a turkey thrashing on the floor board of our Rambler station wagon. All us kids having a conniption fits. We get home and Mom chopped the turkeys head off, plucked off the feathers, gutted it, cut it up and we had fresh fried turkey for dinner. And that was Mom. Waste not want not.

Iva is preceded in death by her husband, Joe and daughter, Sherry. She is survived by her kids Joe and Linda; two grandchildren Alyson Cornett, age 31, Linda's daughter and Kurt Cornett, age 27 Joe's son. She also has two wonderful great grandchildren; Landon age 4 and Tristan age 1, both from granddaughter Alyson Cornett.

Iva will be missed by more people then you can count. A remembrance for close family and friends will be announced.
