• Obituary: The Monitor, 2 Mar 2004, Hidalgo Co, TX. 3 Thomas Maddox Webb, a devoted family man and for many years a community leader in the Rio Grande Valley, died on February 21, 2004, at the age of 96 in San Antonio, Texas. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 61 years, Allie Maverick Welsh Webb, and his parents, Thomas Maddox and Georgia Althea Saunders Webb. Born in San Antonio in 1907, Tom Webb grew up in Palestine, Texas. As a boy, Tom spent many summers working cattle with his adored grandfather, Texas Trail-driver, George Saunders, and as a teenager in Palestine and later at college, enjoyed acting in dramatic productions. He attended the University of Texas where he joined the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Tom treasured the friendships he made as a Phi Gam and became a Lifetime Member. Later, working in San Antonio, Tom met Alice at the San Antonio Public Library, where she worked as a reference librarian. They married in 1940. During WWII, Tom Webb was stationed in Guam, serving as a medic in the U.S. Navy. Returning home, he moved his growing family to San Juan, Texas, where he lived for the next fifty-one years. His early years were spent in business as a lumberman, but at the age 60, he changed careers and became a high school history teacher in Donna, Texas. A gentleman, Tom Webb enjoyed broad interests. He gardened (and was famous for presenting the ladies with his home-grown gardenias and pansies); he read books and kept current with the world; he and Alice played bridge with a bridge group for many years, and Tom was active in community organizations, serving as president of both the San Juan Lions Club and the Pharr Rotary Club. His involvement didn't stop there, and during his years teaching, Tom Webb was found every summer shepherding young people through the major museums and cities in Europe. Upon retirement from teaching, his passion for history did not dim but rather shifted to active involvement with the Rio Grande Historical Society and the Hidalgo County Historical Museum. Many of the historical markers found in the Valley today were put in place due to Tom Webb's vision and determination. Tom Webb is survived by his daughter, Allie Webb Marth of San Antonio; and his son, Thomas Maddox Webb, Jr and wife, Judith of Edinburg; two grandchildren, Jennifer Marth Todd and husband, Steven and Reuben Thomas Webb Marth; four great-grandchildren, Caleb, Grace, and Elijah Todd and Peyton Marth; and many nieces and nephews. Services were conducted for Mr. Webb on Saturday, February 28, 2004. Burial was at San Jose Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, San Antonio, Texas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hidalgo County Historical Museum, Edinburg, Texas. Condolences may be sent to the Webb family at . Arrangements by the Angelus Funeral Home, 1119 N. St. Mary's St., San Antonio, Texas 78215 (210) 227-1461.
