• Obituary: Kerville Daily Times, 7 Sep 2004, Kerr Co, TX. KERRVILLE ? Mr. Vernon John Burns, age 87, of Kerrville, Texas, retired postmaster and longtime resident of Ingram, passed away Sunday, Sept. 5, 2004, at his residence.

He was born April 3, 1917, in Ingram, Texas, to Luther Daniel Burns and Sarah Ruth Clark, who were some of the early settlers of Ingram.

Mr. Burns joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1941 and was honorably discharged in 1945. He served as a flight radio technician and Staff Sergeant.

Vernon met Frances Jane Fabian while stationed at the Marfa, Texas, air base and they were married on Jan. 20, 1945, in Alpine, Texas.

After his military service, Mr. Burns was employed by Council Electric Shop in Ingram and later purchased the business, changing the name to Burns Electric Com-pany. In 1957, he was appointed U.S. Postmaster of Ingram by President Dwight Eisenhower. He retired from the post office in 1973 and worked as a real estate broker. Vernon also served on the Ingram School Tax Equalization Board, the Nichols Cemetery Committee and as a charter member of the Ingram City Council. Other activities included the Lions Club and the Ingram Volunteer Fire Department.

Vernon owned his own airplane during the 1960s and enjoyed flying, ranching, writing short stores, fishing and having his morning coffee with friends at the local feed store.

He will be remembered for being a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was a true friend and respected community member.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, of Kerrville; son, Lenord, of Angleton, Texas; daughter, Barbara Zengler and husband, J.R., of Leon Springs, Texas; son, Michael and wife, Candice, of Sparks, Nevada; daughter, Beverly Parks and husband, Charlie, of Buchanan Dam, Texas; daughter, Bonnie Richards and husband, Jimmy, of Cedar Park, Texas; daughter, Beckie Taylor and husband, Lewis, of Harper, Texas; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Burns will be on Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at 2 p.m. at Grimes Funeral Chapels. Interment will follow in Nichols Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the American Cancer Society, 18 Antelope Trail, Kerrville, Texas 78028. The family would like to extend their appreciation for the care Mr. Burns received from Peterson Hospice
