• Biography. My great aunt Iris -was- the daughter of Richard Reuben Barrow and Emelie Montaut (if I misread, I am sorry). But I do not ever remember any member of my family referring to Iris as "Connie Iris" maybe that was what threw me.

After her mother and father died, Iris lived with her sister (Ida whom I will refer to as "Aunt Ida") for the rest of her life in the home their father bought on East 23rd St. in Houston's Sunset Heights. My cousin Chris (Aunt Lola's grandson) and his uncle (my cousin Hillary) drove by the location a couple of months ago and they tell me that the house has been torn down. It's a shame. It was on two lots that backed up to an alley. Aunt Ida kept chickens, geese and occasionally a horse, goat or rabbit in the back yard and raised canaries and parakeets on her enclosed back porch. She had the greenest thumb I have ever had the privilege to know. She tended an ENORMOUS and hugely productive fig tree next to the chicken yard, a huge poinsettia that grew on the south facing side of the house, and a huge lemon tree (I have a picture of Richard Reuben next to that lemon tree). In her front yard a pyracantha fruited red and filled up with hungry birds in winter and tall old myrtles bloomed along her shell driveway in the summer (mother and her sister used to hide in the myrtles or in the crawlspace under the house to eavesdrop when the adults would sit outside on the porch to talk).

Aunt Ida and Iris are buried with much of their family in Forest Park Lawndale (a large cemetery off Lawndale near I-45 in Houston), along with my grandmother (Leona), at least one brother (Frank, I think), their parents and Aunt Ida's daughter, LaVerne (who died childless at 24 on her Valentine's day birthday). Aunt Lola is buried in Lawndale, too, though I can't remember if it is near the rest of the family right off hand. I think Uncle Willie (Aunt Edna's husband) may be buried near them as well, but I am not certain of it.
