• Obituary: Daily Progress, 15 Feb 2004, Charlottesville (city), VA. 3 Gene Burchel Hale Sr., 79, died Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, in Parisppany, N.J. He was born on May 23, 1924 in Carbon Glow, KY, the son of the late James Marion Hale and Cora Kelly Hale.
Raised in Eastern Kentucky, Mr. Hale also resided in Charlottesville, Upper Arlington, Oh., Fort Wayne, In, Convent Station, Chatham, and Fanwood, NJ.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mary Coleman Hale, and by a brother, George Hale. He is survived by a son, Gene B. hale Jr., and wife, Barbara of Morristown, NJ; and three daughters, Janice Hale Allen of Mendham, NJ, Susan Hale (Douglas) McKibbin of Charlottesville, and Manette Hale (Charles) Friske of Upper Arlington, Oh. He is also survived by a brother, Jack K. Hale and wife, Hazel, of Atlanta, Ga.; a brother, James W. Hale and wife, Virginia of Bowling Green, Ky.; a sister, Elizabeth H. (Wiley) DuVall of Asheville, NC, and Kim Hale, widow of his brother George of Washington, DC. He is also survived by his beloved 13 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
After serving in the U.S. Army 69th Infantry during WWII, Mr. Hale joined the line crew of Kentucky Power Company in 1947. In 1989 after a 42-year career in labor relations and personnel management, he retired from the parent company, American Electric Power, as Senior Vice President of Human Resources.
He was an elder in the Presbyterian Church and proudly served on the Board of Trustees of Pikeville College for a number of years.
Mr. Hale was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He leaves a legacy for his family of strength and integrity with a dedication to the character and well being of all children.
A "Celebration of Life" will be held on May 22, 2004, in Pikeville, Ky. Memorial donations may be made to Pikeville College, Development Office, 147 Sycamore Street, Pikeville, KY 41501.
