She was born on January 12, 1909, in Elizabethton, Tennessee, to the late John Frank and Anna Belle Greene Nance, and was a native of Avery County, North Carolina.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marie Cornett, two granddaughters, Rena Valentine and Pasty Hartley, and one great-grandson Gregory Valentine.
She was a homemaker and devout Christian. Mrs. Cornett, along with her late husband, the Rev. James Cornett, founded the Church of Jesus Christ in Newland, North Carolina in 1937 and pastored until 1986.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory a daughter, Peggy McCumber of Newland; three grandchildren: Diane Jaynes and husband Roy of Newland, NC, Judy Vines and husband Brian of Johnson City, TN, and Jack E. Muriet of Dayton, OH; seven great-grandchildren: Rev. Jeffery Jaynes and wife Rena of Newland, NC, Jerry Jaynes and wife Amanda of Newland, NC, Tammie Marshall and husband Rev. Greg Marshall of Rogersville, TN, Casey Hartley and wife Jamie of Linville, NC, Stacie Stewart and husband Phil of Newland, NC, Tracie Hartley of Murrell?s Inlet, SC, and Jimmy Valentine of Gastonia, NC; along with thirteen great- great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel Cornett will be held at 8 pm on Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at the Church of Jesus Christ with the Rev. Dave Atkins and Rev. Jeff Jaynes officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 pm until 8 pm on Tuesday. The grave-side service will be held on Wednesday at 11 am. Please meet at the Church of Jesus Christ at 10:15 am to go in the precession.
Memorials may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ New Church Account Building Fund.
