• Obituary: The Elizabethon Star, 12 Sep 2004, Carter Co, TN. 3 Ray McKinney Ray McKinney, age 87, 644 Shell Creek Road, Roan Mountain, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004, in the Roan Highlands Nursing Center, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late W.L. and Elvira Knight McKinney. He was preceded in death by a son, Raymond Gary McKinney; a daughter, Doris McKinney; three brothers, Sanford McKinney, Marion McKinney and Bynum McKinney; two sisters, Belle Sluder and Ethel Mae Greene; and two grandsons, Stephen McKinney and Michael Boone. Mr. McKinney was the oldest member of Upper Shell Creek Christian Church. He was retired from the U.S. Forestry Service. Survivors include his wife, Beulah Shell McKinney, of the home; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Sylvia and Rack Elliott, Dunedin, Fla., Geraldine and Jack Humphreys, Johnson City, and Eva Wexler, Mooresville, N.C.; six grandchildren, Tom Boone, Susie Wexler, Deanna Anglin, Todd McKinney, Lynette Turbyfill and Keith McKinney; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Mr. Bedford Motley, Minister officiating. Music will be under the direction of Donna and Marsha. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday prior to the service, or at the residence, 644 Shell Creek Road at any time. Graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the Perry Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be men of Upper Shell Creek Christian Church, nursing staff at Roan Highlands Nursing Center and friends and neighbors. Those planning to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home chapel at 9:15 a.m. Monday to go in procession to the cemetery. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to the Carter County Emergency and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1951, Elizabethton, TN 37644.
