Mary Akers McIntyre Biggs, 94, of Lumberton, N.C., died Thursday, May 11, 2006, at Southeastern Regional Medical Center.

She was born September 14, 1911 in Stuart and was a daughter of the late Corneila Peters and Dr. Waller C. Akers. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Charlie S. McIntyre Sr. and Chalmers Biggs; and two brothers, Dick Akers and Dr. James C. Akers.

She received her education in Stuart and at Meredith College, where she majored in public school music and was an active member of the college choir and the Glee Club.

After teaching school for one year in Stuart she moved to Lumberton to become a teacher in the Robeson County School System. After her marriage in 1936, she retired and joined Lumberton Presbyterian Church in 1937, where she served with the women of the church in various capacities and was a member of the choir for over 50 years.
She returned to teaching in 1959 at Rowland-Norment School and retired after 17 years of service. She was a member of the Inquires' Club, Pine Needles Garden Club and several bridge clubs.

Surviving are two sons, Charlie S. McIntyre Jr. and Stewart McIntyre, both of Lumberton, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Susan Kelly of Lumberton; two grandchildren; one stepgrandson; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Monday at First Presbyterian Church with Dr. Stuart T. Wilson officiating. Burial was in Meadowbrook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Presbyterian Women of First Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1061, Lumberton, N.C. 28359.
Arrangements were by Biggs Funeral Home in Lumberton.
