Doris Nichol Buckman, 89, died March 25, 2008 in The Highlands at Wyomissing, where she had been a resident since 1995. She was the widow of William J. Nichol to whom she was married for 51 years and Harvey M. Buckman.
Born in Floyd County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Lathie W. and Isa E. Lester. She was a 1935 graduate of Oxford High School and attended West Chester State Teachers College.
Doris became a resident of Landenberg in 1939 when she and her husband moved to a dairy farm. Besides being a devoted mother and homemaker, she was a piano teacher, collector of antiques, gardener and avid reader. She also enjoyed duplicate bridge and hosted many large family gatherings. Doris was a former member of New London Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school and served as an elder. After moving to The Highlands, she joined First Presbyterian Church, Reading. She was a former member of the West Grove Garden Club, Antique Club, and Avon Grove School Board and belonged to the Daughters of the American Revolution and Colonial Dames XVII Century.
She is survived by four children: William L. Nichol, husband of B. Kaye, Alloway, N.J. and Custer, S.D.; Janet N., wife of William L. Luyben, Perkiomenville; Judith A. Nichol, wife of James M. Dahl, Denver, Pa. and John A. Nichol, husband of Linda A., Landenberg. Other survivors include seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister, Nancy Z. Lester, Newark, DE and a brother, Charles D. Lester, Lincoln University. She was predeceased by brothers and a sister: Harold, Forrest, and Howard Lester and Joan L. St. John.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2008 at 11 a.m. in New London Presbyterian Church, 1986 Newark Rd., New London with the Rev. Jeffrey Lampl officiating. Friends and family may call between 9:30 and 11 a.m. in the church. Interment will be private.
