• Obituary: Stanwood/Camano News, 16 Sep 2003, Stanwood, Snohomish CO, WA. 3 Lois Marie Cathey Bush, age 80, long-time Snohomish County resident and award-winning community volunteer, passed away Sept. 9, 2003. Lois was born Oct. 14, 1922, in Gresham, OR, to Clarence David and Jessie Frances Cathey. She spent her childhood fly-fishing and bird hunting with her older brother Alan on the Big Sandy River, where her father tended the dam. She lost her mother at age 7 and was reared by her father with the loving help of Edith Howell, nanny and housekeeper. Years later, her father married Edith, who gave birth to Lois's sister, Mable Buss of Hilltop Lakes, TX. Lois graduated from Sandy Union High School and later attended Seattle Pacific College. Although she first met her husband-to-be at age 8, when his family moved to Oregon, it was at Seattle Pacific in 1941, that the two began to date and fell in love. They were married at the bride's home at the
Little Marmot Dam on the Big Sandy in 1943.
From 1943 until 1981, Lois and Ed served the Oregon and the Pacific Northwest Free Methodist Conferences as pastor and wife in numerous churches throughout western Oregon and Washington. In 1948, Clarene Marie was born, followed shortly thereafter by Gayle Edward in 1949. Both Clarene and Gayle are graduates of Seattle Pacific College.
Lois and Ed retired in 1981, moving to the Warm Beach Senior Community, where Lois continued to actively volunteer at the thrift shop and answering phones at the nursing home, both in the front office and the nurse's station. She also supervised the "collectibles" section of the popular Warm Beach Community Christmas Bazaar for many years.
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of America honored Lois in 2002 for 17 years of significant service to the community. For at least three consecutive years, Lois gave in excess of 2,000 hours annually, ranking in the top three of all Snohomish County senior volunteers.
She was well loved for her generous spirit, kind deeds and delightful sense of humor, and was lov-ingly cared for by friends and family in her home until her peaceful passing. Lois was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Edward Bush; her brother, Alan Cathey; and her son-in-law, Robert Fleming.
She is survived by daughter Clare, who developed and administers a highly-acclaimed program at Lee College in Baytown, TX; and son Gayle, a prominent commercial bankruptcy attorney in Seattle. Other survivors include sister Mable and brother-in-law Jerry Buss; life-long friend and companion Mae Olive Gillett of Salem, OR; daughter-in-law Mary Ellen Hudgins; and grandchildren Alexandra Bush, Jonah Hudgins and his wife Amy; and great-grandchildren Julie and Marie Fleming of Edwards AFB, CA, and Lyric Otto, of Issaquah, WA.
A memorial service was held Sat., Sept. 13, at Warm Beach Manor in the Beachwood Lounge.
The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either the Rancho Betania Tool Fund or Warm Beach Manor. Checks should be made payable to Warm Beach Free
