• Obituary. ⁵ Straley H. Cornett, age 86, passed away Monday, April 25, 2005, at Twin County Regional Hospital, Galax. He was born Jan. 9, 1919, in Flatridge to Lonnie Ovell and Drucy Izora Anderson Cornett. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mamie E. Anderson Cornett; and second wife, Frances Octavie Padgett Cornett; a daughter, Mary A. Cornett Waller; a sister, Gladys Cornett Melton; three brothers, Hurley C. Cornett, Archie A. Cornett and J. Dewey Cornett. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Lewis and Barbara Cornett of Jonesville, N.C., and Roger and Sandy Cornett of White City, Ore.; seven grandchildren, Kaye Holdaway of Fries, Susan Tate of Cana, Rocky Holdaway of Maryland, Mary E. Duplisea and spouse, Johnny and Samuel R. Cornett and spouse, Tonya, all of Jonesville, N.C., and Amanda Cornett and Joshua Cornett, both of White City, Ore.; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three sisters-in-law, Anna Mae White of Manassas, Rose Anderson of Fries and Neomi Blevins of West Jefferson, N.C.; several nieces and nephews; and very special friend and health care CNA, Brenda Fender. A funeral was held Wednesday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, with burial in the Central Cemetery, Flatridge. The Revs. Fred E. Jennings and Ted Bartlett officiated. Flowers will be appreciated or memorial contributions may be made to the Fries Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 9, Fries, Va. 24330.
