• Obituary: Springfield New - Leader, 14 May 2007, Springfield, MO. 4 Evelyn Griffin, M.D. age 91, of Springfield, passed away at 7:55 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007, in Doctor's Hospital. She was born January 11, 1916, in Thomasville, Mo., to Dr. Grover Cleveland and Ossie Price (Thomas) Plummer. Dr. Griffin was a 1933 graduate of Buffalo High School and attended Southwest Teachers College (Missouri State) and Central Methodist College in Fayette, Mo. Dr. Griffin was a Summa Cum Laude graduate of the University of Tennessee Medical School in Memphis and was the first woman to graduate from that institution. Evelyn married Dr. Olin A. Griffin May 29, 1942, and together they returned to Buffalo following World War II and entered medical practice with her father. In 1962 she went to work for the State of Missouri Division of Health and later in the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, retiring in 1986. She was a member of the Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Olin Griffin, on September 4, 1995; and two brothers. Dr. Griffin is survived by her son, Kent Griffin of Springfield and her daughter, Margaret Griffin of Columbia, Mo. A private family graveside service and burial will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2007, in Maple Park Cemetery under the direction of Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel. No visitation is scheduled; however friends may call after 1 p.m. today in the funeral home. The casket will be closed at all times. Memorial contributions may be made to Southwest Missouri Humane Society, 3161 W Norton Rd.; Springfield, MO 65803.
