Basic Dumplings
Stir together the flour, baking powder, sugar and salt in a mixing bowl. Cut in the butter with a pastry blender until crumbly. Stir in the milk. Add a tablespoon of milk if the dough is a little dry at this point. The dough should be soft and sticky.
Drop by spoonfuls onto boiling stew. Boil gently for 10 minutes, then cover the stew and boil for an additional 10 minutes.
