Big Flaky Biscuits
Combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a mixing bowl. Blend the shortening in with a pastry blender. Gradually stir in the milk until dough pulls away from the side of the bowl.
Knead the dough a few times (don't overdo it!). Roll the dough out to about 1 inch thick. Use a large cookie cutter or a water glass to cut out the biscuits about 3" to 4" in diameter. Put the biscuits onto an ungreased baking sheet.
Bake for 13 to 15 minutes at 425° F, or until top and edges brown.
